Two drumkits, guitar, bass, vocals o' a line-up like that will make any rock music fan's heart beat faster. At any rate an instrument collection like this sets the stage for exquisite rock.

ツイン・ドラムス、ギター、ベース、ヴォーカルというラインナップは、 ロックファンの心を興奮させるに違いない。とにかく、このような 楽器の集合は洗練されたロックの為のステージを用意するのだ。

The Savoy Truffle, the band under consideration here, has used this approach to prepare a successful debut album. Considering that the fivesome has committed itself to one of the most interesting styles of rock o' southern rock this should be enough to incite the curiosity of all maniacs(=specific fans).

ここで取り上げるThe Savoy Truffleというバンドは大成功のデビュー・アルバム（注："To The Higher Ground"）を作り上げるのにこのアプローチを使用した。この5人組が自らをサザン・ロックというロックの最もおもしろいスタイルに置いたことを考えると、これはあらゆるマニアの興味を駆り立てるに十分だろう。

This self titled CD immediately met the high expectations that it set for us. Already the opening track "Highway Man" takes off with a terrific rock sound. On "Headin' Out to California" ones hears echoes of the good old Allman Brothers, and at other times one is reminded of old Point Blank albums, the great Dickey Betts, and of course the fantastic Grateful Dead. Just like the famous representatives of the style, the Savoy Truffle manage adroitly to vary the tempo and the mood of the songs. On one track they really rock it up, and then on the next acoustic guitars, dobro, and congas will be to the fore on a quiet track more remininscent of coutry music.

このバンド名と同題のCDは直ちに我々の高い期待と合致した。オープニング曲の"Highway Man"から既にすごいロック・サウンドで走り出している。"Headin' Out To California"では、ある者は古き良きAllman Brothersの音を聴くだろうし、またある時ある者はかつてのPoint Blankアルバムや偉大なDickey Bettsやはたまたあの幻想的なGrateful Deadを想起するだろう。まさしくそのスタイルの有名な代表者たちのように、The Savoy Truffleは曲のテンポやムードを巧みに多様化させている。ある曲では彼らは心底ロックし、かと思うと次のカントリー・ミュージックをしのばせる静かな曲ではアコースティック・ギターやドブロ、コンガが耳をひくのだ。

And yet, by no means is this only a dwelling on the past, or mere copying of the late greats, something that could only go wrong anyway. In a genre that is almost as old as rock itself, the Savoy Truffle manage to find their very own style. This is probably also due to the fact that the five musicians stem not from the US, but rather from Japan. This means that they are exposed to completely different influences, and have an entirely different path to their music, than do the stateside bands.

そしてさらには、決してこれは過去への懐古や偉大なものの複製だけではないし、そう思うならそれは間違いだろう。ロックそのものとほぼ等しく古いジャンルにおいて、The Savoy Truffleは彼等ならではのスタイルをうまく見つけているのだ。これはおそらくこの5人のミュージシャン達がアメリカからではなく、むしろ日本という国から出て来たという事実にも起因しているのだろう。これは彼等がアメリカのバンドとは全く違う影響にさらされ、また彼等自身の音楽に行き着くまでに全く別の道をたどってきたということなのだ。

All in all the Savoy Truffle are definitely a band worth exploring, and not only because of their for this style of music unusual background. To anyone interested in high quality rock music, these five Japanese deliver the goods.

概して言えば、The Savoy Truffleは、独特な音楽的バックグラウンドをもったこの彼等のスタイル故というだけでなく、まさしく体験するに値するバンドである。クォリティの高いロックに興味を持っている者にとって、この5人の日本人はまさしく望むものを与えてくれるだろう。
